The two examples above show the use of symmetry
"symmetry" is when two sides of artwork are exactly the same
we do say that this scene is "balanced"
....the space used is exactly the same on both sides.
but ..... balance does not have to mean symmetrical!
look at the picture to the left. imagine if we took away one of the nightstands? the scene would no longer be balanced! but if we put in something of similar size ...such as a night stand...while the scene is no longer symmetrical....it is balanced
look at the image above. can you see how the one on the right is not balanced?
Think of balance like a teeter totter! One side has to be around the same size as the other. The picture to the left is not balanced! Do you know why?
I f we want symmetrical balance....we want two balls the same size
If we just want balance....we can replace one of the balls with....lets use a square....as long as it is the same size!! Does that make sense?

First, we must hold our paper horizontally.
Next, we must fold it in half
Then, we will paint...just half of our scene
We will then fold the paper over......resulting in a 'mirror image" on the left side
Do not paint in any details!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After we fold over the paper, we will get most of the lines transferred to the left side of the paper.
Go over any lines on the left side that need touching up.
Now, we will color in the details ...neatly using crayons
do not use colored pencils!!
Our scene is symmetrical until we add in the sun. But it wouldnt' make sense to add in another sun on the left side. We need to substitute for something else....in this case,...a cloud!
This scene is balanced....but not symmetrical!
