The earliest Greek civilizations started around 4,000 years ago! their culture still impacts our lives today, in the arts, philosophy, science, math, literature & politics!
"trial by jury," greek myths, democracy, theater & the Olympics are just a few things that came out of ancient greece. did you know that the ancient greeks played an important part in the development of our alphabet? the first two letters of the greek alphabet "alpha" & "beta" gave us the word alphabet. They created the first alphabet with vowels!!
we say that these are some of the legacies left behind from ancient greece.
individuals leave a legacy as well....it means "how you remember them" Socrates, Plato, & Aristotle were famous Greek philosophers. Hippocrates influenced medicine.
although they developed an alphabet, it was very common in the ancient world to tell stories via pictures. The ancient Greeks are known for the stories told on their pottery.
lines make shapes. as you look at the artwork here...can you identify lines such as horizontal, vertical, curved, diagonal, and zig-zag?
Before there was a formal alphabet, stories were told on vases. What do you think the story was about on this vase to the left?
what kind of lines do you see in the artwork above?
we will create a legacy vase, which shall contain at least one of the 5 main lines discussed above, and at least two geometric shapes...
geometric shapes are shapes such as circles, squares, squares, etc.
.....how will you be remembered by future generations?
Do you think that this person might be remembered for their love of music?
Do you think that this person might be remembered for their love of music?
here is a legacy vase in progress. the legacy here is that this student loved "drama" {acting} did you also notice the geometric shapes {squares} along the top rim? he added colored circles to the finished vase on the bottom
the design above is coming along nicely! Geometric shapes frame the top and bottom. The person wants you to know that she is against smoking, and wants to educate people about the evils of it.
This girl wants to be remembered for her love of music
This boy wants to be remembered for his love of theater and art
