During the first art class in 6th grade.....we investigated how this concept works....the idea is to "fool the eye" and make it look like we can "walk into a scene
in one point perspective....you must imagine that all lines disappear in one spot on the page. This is called the "vanishing point" It is how you generate a sense of depth.
in the first art class, you would have seen this photo. You'll recall {or learn} that
* The largest items are placed at the bottom of the paper
{this area is called the foreground!}
* Items in the middle of the page are smaller than
those in the foreground
{this area is called the mid ground!}
* items located at the top of the paper are the smallest!
this is where you might have the sky with clouds, a plane, the sun or moon, mountains and so on
{this area is called the back ground}
are the bales of hay in the photo below in the
foreground or the background?
A Famous Artist named Leonardo da Vinci {who painted the "Mona Lisa" you see on the left} was one of the first artists to discover that to show "depth"....... could only be done by placing large items at the bottom and the smallest items at the top
When he looked at a room inside of a cathedral, he saw lines that appeared to be leading to one point. By using these lines.... as you see below, one could make it look like you could walk into a room
in this lesson we'll combine what we know with this new information!!
1. We start with a simple horizontal line.........da vinci called this the horizon line
it separates the earth from the sky for this project
2. we will place a dot in the middle! all lines will connect to this dot. It looks like the lines disappear in the dot
we call this dot the "vanishing point"
notice that the first tree is in the foreground.....it is the biggest
notice that the trees are getting smaller, as are the lines in the street
the third tree is located in the mid ground!! it should be smaller than the one in the foreground, and it is!!
WE CAN ADD OTHER INTERESTING THINGS SUCH AS TELEPHONE POLES OR STREET LIGHTS, RAILROAD TRACKS, ETC.
PLEASE NOTE:
the trees were lined up with a pencil and ruler, and go to the vanishing point
the tulips were lined up with pencil and ruler and go to the vanishing point
the road was lined with pencil and ruler, and the lines of depth ......go to the vanishing point
There are 3 examples here....of items that go to the vanishing point!
Per the rubric, you MUST HAVE at least 3 items that go to the vanishing point
For the creativity portion of your grade, you need a total of ....
8 different items for 2 points
5 different items for 1 point
In the example here, adding the clouds is a 4th item!!
